Repairing Grinder Parts for Free
An angle die grinder may appear very simple. But they are made up of 25 to 30 grinder parts. Most of them are quite guessable. O ring, retaining ring, spiral bevel gear, ball bearing, spindle, wheel cover, pan head screw, tapping screw, inner flange, lock nut, woodruff key, grip holder, cord guard, strain relief, standing lock nut, rubber pad, compression spring, baffle plate, fan, insulating washer. It is interesting that most of these grinder parts can be re used and interchangeable with its other models.
These individual parts match most of the different models of the same brand. Hence you can get second hand stuff also and get working with them for minor faults of yours by making the best out of the good parts in both.
Once your apparatus fails, do not throw them away. You can remove the case and preserve the spare parts which are in good condition in your garage. They can come handy when you find some minor repairs with another apparatus.
You can become an engineer who would debug an angle die grinder that has failed amidst working with a little effort. It may contain dust inside it because of some particles entering in or because of wear and tear.
First comes personal safety. Hence, unplug the unit before experimenting with it. Keep your face at a distance from the device. Make sure to wear your goggles and cover your nose so that you don't inhale the dust. Keep out of reach to children too.
Grinder parts like the brushes become quite faulty mostly than other parts. Let's set them right right-away. Unscrew the angle die grinder case and remove the housing cautiously. You will see square shaped brush holders, made of brass. Remove them from the unit using your simple tool like a flat screw driver. The brushes will be made of carbon usually a pair of them on either side. Check both of them at once as they operate together.
If you see the brushes dirty, clean those with something may be even a pencil eraser. If there is more dust, you can use some compressed air to be blown off to remove the dust. But if they are worn off or off shape, you will have them replaced.
Meanwhile, to finish the work you started with; you can make some minimal repairs and adjust for the time being. Take a piece of sand paper from your tool kit and rub these brushes against them until their surface become smooth. Once they get smoother, you can replace them back from where you took. Hurray! Plug your unit and check the grinder parts right away.
